The best time of year for Panchakarma in Varanasi
Classical texts tie each karma to the season in which its dosha naturally rises. Varanasi’s calendar makes this unusually clean — you can plan a course with the weather rather than against it.
Which season suits which karma
Vasanta · for Kapha
Kapha liquefies as the cold breaks. The classical window for Vamana, and the best time to treat chronic cough, congestion and heaviness before summer sets in.
Sharad · for Pitta
Pitta peaks once the monsoon heat lifts. This is when Virechana is prescribed — the strongest season for skin disease, acidity and liver complaints.
Varsha · for Vata
Vata is most disturbed in the rains, which is exactly why the monsoon is the traditional Basti season for joint pain, sciatica and arthritis.
What each season is actually like here
Varanasi runs hot from late April to late June, wet from July, and cool and pleasant from October through February. That matters practically, not just theoretically — you will be coming in daily for two hours at the same hour every morning.
- October – FebruaryThe easiest months to attend. Cool mornings, comfortable travel, and the best window for a long 21-day course.
- March – AprilPleasant and dry. Classical Vamana season and a good time for a spring clean-out before the heat.
- May – JuneVery hot. Shorter courses and cooling therapies only. Most people prefer to postpone a full course.
- July – SeptemberHumid and wet, but the traditional Basti window. Joint pain patients often get their best results here.
None of these are hard gates
Chronic pain and chronic skin disease are treated the year round. The seasons simply tell you when a course will do the most work for the same number of days — they are an optimisation, not a rule.
If your back is locked in January, you do not wait until July. You come in January, take the therapy that suits January, and plan the deeper Basti series for the monsoon if it is still needed.
The one genuine constraint is the heat. Between mid-May and late June, we shorten courses and lean on cooling therapies, because a long oleation phase in 44°C is uncomfortable for everyone and pointless for most.
